New car sales in October: 25% decrease year-on-year Industry group “Effect of typhoon damage” November 1, 21:42

Last month, the number of new cars sold in the country dropped by about 25% compared to the same month last year. The industry group says that the main factor is the drop in the number of customers visiting dealers in areas where flood damage was caused by Typhoon # 19.

According to announcements by the Japan Automobile Sales Association, the number of new cars sold in Japan last month was 3147784 units, down 24.9% from the same month last year and decreased for the first time in 4 months.

Of these, ordinary cars, small cars, and trucks decreased by 26.4% to 192,504 units, the smallest in October since the start of statistics in 1968. The number of mini vehicles decreased by 22.3% to 122,280 units.

According to the industry group, the reason for the significant decline in the number of units sold is that the damage caused by Typhoon No.19 occurred during the three-month holiday last month, when the number of customers visiting the store increased.

Another factor is that Honda's flagship mini car had a problem with brake warning lights and production had been suspended since early September.

On the other hand, regarding the impact of the consumption tax rate hike last month, an industry group said, “We can't say that there has been no reactionary decline, but we can't make a decision just in the past month, and we will continue to pay attention.”
