01 January 2020 David Stern, historian and charismatic commissioner of the NBA, died at the age of 77. On 12 December he had been suffering from a cerebral hemorrhage from which he has not recovered. This was announced by the current commissioner Adam Silver through an official note.Stern was at the helm of American professional basketball for thirty years, from 1984 to 2014. He played a leading role in the expansion of the NBA, both in the United States and in the rest of the world, after his election.
With ex-FIBA secretary general Boris Stankovic he was also the architect of the opening to NBA players of international competitions, including the Olympics, since 1992. The ex-lawyer has been replaced by his former right arm, Adam Silver, in February 2014.
