The Frenchman Gaël Monfils , sixteenth seeded, retired this Saturday in seminars of the 1000 Masters of Montreal , leaving the road free to the Spanish Rafael Nadal final . Monfils retired due to an ankle injury, organizers of the event said.
The Frenchman had earlier defeated also the Spanish Roberto Bautista (N.13) by 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7/2) in a quarter-final match that was postponed on Friday because of the rain . Monfils should have started his semifinal against Nadal almost two hours after his victory over Bautista.
Against Bautista, since the second set, the Frenchman had shown signs of pain, regularly touching his left ankle. Five weeks ago, a sprain forced him to retire in the first round of Wimbledon .
Previously, in a Russian semifinal, Daniil Medvedev , eighth favorite, beat fellow countryman Karen Khachanov 6-1, 7-6 (8/6) in one hour and 24 minutes of play.
