The Capital Team had no major worries to defeat the California guests by 5-2 at home. Washington's first goal came already 50 seconds into the match, and the score for the third period was 3-0.

However, the 3-0 goal itself seemed half the players on the ice barely noticed, as they were fully occupied by a fight behind the goal cage. More and more players were gathering, the referees were trying to get in between and when Garnet Hathaway got a slap in the face by Anaheim's Erik Gudbranson, the measure was rushed for the Washington forward who aimed a mockery at his opponent.

- It's something you just don't do in a match, Gudbranson tells nhl.com afterwards.

Hathaway got a match penalty and Anaheim's Nick Ritchie was shown off because he got into a fight between two other players.

In retrospect, Garnet Hathaway was remorseful.

- It was an emotional play. It was a first - and unfortunately, wrong - reaction of me after Gudbranson's thumping, he tells nhl.com.

Nicklas Bäckström was noted for an assist, for the third match in a row. In total, there have been 14 so far during the season for the 31-year-old. Anaheim's Rickard Rakell also got an assist with him in the minutes.
