Three young people died Sunday, swept away by the sudden flood of a river in Martinique, in Marigot, in the north of the island, one learned from the firemen.

The three young people, whose ages were not specified, had come to enjoy the river, at a place called Fond Papin, while Météo France had placed the island in yellow vigilance for heavy rain and thunderstorms. They were swept away around 15h by a sudden rise of the waters of the river Lorrain, in the municipality of Marigot. Two bodies were recovered in the afternoon by gendarmes and firemen, one just before dark with the support of the civil security helicopter. The third body was still wanted and an investigation was underway to determine the circumstances of the tragedy.

Lorrain has the reputation of climbing quickly

Martinique was placed in yellow vigil Saturday afternoon for heavy rain and thunderstorm while it was sunny. In the morning, a few showers washed the island, especially in the center and the north, but it was especially in the mountains that it rained a lot. The Lorrain River has the reputation of climbing quickly when it rains upstream.

Sunday afternoon, the firefighters also rescued four people blocked by the rising waters in Fort-de-France, the site of Fontaine Didier, frequented by many hikers. In Saint Joseph, on the site of Coeur Bouliki, many bathers were also trapped by a flood that covered the ford leading to the car park. It was not until the water returned to normal level so that they could return to their vehicles.
