It was, for months, an open secret within the National Regrouping Party (formerly the National Front), but so far neither of them had admitted it publicly. Marine Le Pen, president of the French right-wing party, and the deputy of his formation Louis Aliot are no longer a couple, as confirmed by the French politician to the newspaper L'Opinion.
Le Pen - daughter of ultra-right-wing Jean-Marie Le Pen, founder of the National Front - and Aliot - RN deputy for the Eastern Pyrenees - had been together for 10 years, although they had never married. Their respective electoral fiefs, Hénin-Beaumont and Perpignan, are 1,000 kilometers away.
"It happens to one marriage in two. There is still a lot of affection between us," the French deputy told L'Opinion . Le Pen, 51, has not yet made statements about his separation.
Marine Le Pen, the youngest daughter of the former ultra-rightist leader, was married twice: the first with Franck Chauffroy (1997-2000) and the second with Éric Lorio (2002-2006). His two former husbands also worked for the National Front.
Le Pen is the mother of three children: Jehanne, 21, and the twins, Louis and Mathilde, 20, the result of their first marriage. Le Pen, always on the political front, has kept his children away from the focus of the press.
Aliot is also divorced and has two children. The 50-year-old deputy is the son of a pied-noir (the French who resided in Algeria and were forced to leave after the country's independence in 1962) of Valencian origin.
Although they are no longer a sentimental couple, Aliot says that on the political level he remains faithful to Marine Le Pen. "Politically we are in the same line. I have always supported it. I am a Marinist and always will be," added the ultra-right deputy, who in recent months has withdrawn a little from national politics to concentrate on the preparation of municipal elections for Perpignan (southeast of France, on the border with Spain).
Aliot, who held the positions of secretary general and vice president of the National Front, has in recent years been a great ally of Marine Le Pen in his efforts to "demonize" the party and cast the most radical members to try to grow and attract voters.
The old right-wing National Front party officially changed its name in July 2018 to be renamed National Regrouping. In the European elections last May, the Le Pen party was the most voted in France, with 23.34% or votes.
