The annual European Super Cup Final, the meeting between the Champions League and Europa League winning teams, stood this year between Liverpool and Chelsea. And it was an exciting and swinging match at Vodafone park in Istanbul but it was the judging team that stole the biggest headlines beforehand. When Stephanie Frappart blew the game, it was the first time that a full-female judging team ever got the chance to judge a European men's final.

Was put to the test immediately

Chelsea took the lead through Olivier Giroud in the 36th minute after a pass from the new acquisition Christian Pulisic. Pulisic was again late in the game when he got the ball just after half-time and drove all the way to the penalty area where he later placed the ball in the nearest corner. But the goal was properly cleared off after Pulisic was offside when he got the ball. The referee's first real test of the match was passed without any problems.

In the second half, Liverpool switched to Roberto Firmino, a successful switch it would prove. Firmino first assisted Sadio Mane to 1-1 and that result was up to the 92nd minute and the match extended.

Severe punishment

Firma Mane / Firmino was again in the extension when Mane set the management goal. Frappart and her assistant then faced a difficult situation to make a decision on. Chelsea forward Tammy Abraham crashed out to replace Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian. The two players collided in the penalty area and even after the majority of repetitions it was difficult to judge how tough the contact was.

But Stephanie Frappart was safe and sentenced Chelsea to penalties without consulting the VAR room. Jorginho stepped forward for Chelsea and put the receipt there. Despite chances in both directions, the match went to penalties.

After nine safe penalties, it was again time for Abraham and Adrian to meet eye to eye. But this time it was Adrian who won went out of the duel when he saved the decisive penalty and Liverpool thus take their first buck for the season.
