The Berlin conference on Libya, which takes place this Sunday, January 19 in the presence of eleven countries, constitutes for the UN an initiative different from all those which preceded and which sought to solve the Libyan crisis. It does not have the ambition to resolve this crisis but it seeks to set up a mechanism which perpetuates - in the long term - the cease-fire currently in force, by resuming the political dialogue between Libyans.

According to the UN special envoy to Libya Ghassan Salamé, the Berlin conference also aims to set up a follow-up committee including the countries involved in Libya and participating in this Berlin conference .

Regular meetings

For Ghassan Salamé , it is the countries that intervene in Libya - either militarily or by using their influence with the Libyan parties - who must return to more neutrality to help the Libyans break the deadlock.

According to the UN special envoy to Libya, the International Support Committee including the countries participating in Berlin, once formed, should meet regularly to review progress in the Libyan case.

This Sunday, Ghassan Salamé must present to the representatives of the international community present at the Berlin conference, his plan for a way out of the crisis which requires a return to political dialogue.

Political discussions in Geneva

According to our information, the High Council of the State, based in Tripoli, and the Libyan Parliament, based in eastern Libya, and favorable to Marshal Haftar, have already appointed the members of their teams to participate soon in discussions politicians in Geneva. Ghassan Salamé has already sent invitations. Two other committees will also be formed, one military and the other economic.
