The Ground Self-Defense Force's chief, Ground Chief of the Ground Staff, visited Cambodia for the first time and met with Prime Minister Hun Sen, demonstrating his intention to strengthen relations through defense cooperation and human resource exchange.

The leader of the Ground Self-Defense Force, Goro Yuasa, the first Chief of Staff of the Ground Self-Defense Force, officially visited Cambodia as the Chief of Staff of the Self-Defense Forces.

At the meeting, Prime Minister Hun Sen stated, "The bilateral relationship between Japan and Cambodia has a long history and I have worked to strengthen the relationship. This visit is also significant," and welcomed the visit.

On the other hand, Chief of Staff Ryu Yuasa said that the SDF had sent SDF personnel to Cambodia and provided technical guidance and human resource development assuming UN peacekeeping operations (PKO), and will continue through defense cooperation and human resource exchange. In other words, he showed his intention to further strengthen the relationship.

In Cambodia, investment from China, which accounted for more than 40% of foreign investment last year, has supported high economic growth, and the Cambodian government has shown a stance of focusing on China.

The visit also included talks with Cambodian military leaders, which may have signaled Japan's concern that China would increase its maritime presence in the South China Sea.
