14 September 2019 Italy assigned Lampedusa as a safe haven for Ocean Viking, the ship of Sos Méditerranée and Doctors Without Borders with 82 migrants on board rescued off the coast of Libya. It is now being considered whether to have it enter the port directly or to transport migrants on Coast Guard patrol boats. This is what is learned from government sources.

The ship is now heading towards the island south of Sicily.

Yesterday France and Germany said they were ready to welcome each 25% of the migrants who landed in Italy: a step towards the creation of that "temporary mechanism" of distribution to which the European Commission is working and on which counts the new winter Conte to manage humanitarian ship arrivals without crisis. Palazzo Chigi had therefore spoken of a "prompt solution" for the Ocean Viking.
