It may be a great step forward even if for the moment, it is the Fifa who announces it and not the authorities of Tehran: the Iranian women should be allowed to attend football matches. The president of the International Football Federation said on Sunday (September 22nd) that he had received assurances from the Iranian government. A turnaround that comes after the suicide of a young Iranian supporter.

" We were assured that from the next international match in Iran, women would be allowed to enter the football stadiums . FIFA President Gianni Infantino's statement follows the visit of a delegation from the International Football Federation to Tehran. A visit that ended last Friday and during which FIFA demanded that women can attend the matches, without any quota to limit their access to the stadium. The Iranian authorities have yet to confirm and clarify the statements of the President of Fifa.

40 years of forbidden

It has been forty years since the Islamic Revolution of 1979 that Iranian women are no longer allowed to enter the stadiums. The religious authorities intend to protect them from the " male atmosphere " and the " sight of half-naked men ". " This rule has been broken, with a few exceptional occasions. But not for Sahar Khodayari. Last year, this thirty-year-old woman was arrested after trying to attend a match, disguised as a boy.

Ten days ago, she set herself on fire after an interview in a Tehran court, believing she would be sentenced to six months in prison.

Iran will host the Cambodia team next month as part of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.
