During the autumn and winter, many white-backed woodpeckers have been born in Russia and Finland, some of whom have come to Norrbotten and Sweden.

When the bird species began to appear on bird feeds, the county administrative board went out with a request to document it and support it with sebum - and this has produced results. In eg Degerbäcken outside Boden, a white-backed woodpecker has been stationed for a long time.

- Now we hope for a nest. Then we can spend more money on measures for white-backed woodpecker, says Alexandra Lindmark, who works at the nature conservation unit at the county administrative board in Norrbotten.

In the spring, the hope is that white-backed woodpeckers will choose to stay in more suitable areas than in, for example, Degerbäcken.

- We have some very nice places along the coast, and along the Luleå and Råneå river valleys. Many nice suitable biotopes that we want it to find.

Why is it necessary to spend so much resources on a single species?

- It's an umbrella species. If you protect the habitat of white-backed woodpecker, you protect the habitat of many other species, and thus we restore biological diversity.
