19 September 2019The presentation of the Mate 30 in Monaco was the test of strength with which Huawei wanted to show the world, but above all to the White House, that the ban imposed on Google licenses and on products made in the USA does not stop - and maybe not even slows down - the race of the Chinese giant. Your smartphone will probably not have Google's applications and services on board: from Gmail's mail to maps, from Google Drive and Photos to Youtube. On the mate 30 series there will be no Play Store, users will be able to use the Huawei store (the App Gallery) to download the most popular non-Google apps such as Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp, Twitter and others. This device will run as usual on the Android operating system, but in its open source version, that is the basic and free version that Huawei and the other manufacturers are free to use.

Ji: "A new challenge"
"Every challenge we have had to face in these 32 years has also been an opportunity to become stronger," says Walter Ji, Europe's consumer chairman on the sidelines of the presentation. "Since Shenzhen was a village of fishermen and farmers 32 years ago and engineers spent night and day in the lab to take advantage of the air conditioning that they could not have at home, China has changed a lot and a lot has changed Huawei," Ji adds, "at the time it was rare to find a meat dish on the tables, while today it is a country where the citizen spends a lot on technology".

The message is clear: although it will be available in Europe, the Mate 30 Pro route is in China, at least as long as the tender is in force. And in China he expects to sell enough pieces to justify production regardless of the availability of the Google app suite, which is not accessible in the country anyway.

"Every single employee of the company is committed to the challenges we face in these months, from top managers to the last deliveryman," he says, "and this has allowed us to become number 1 in the networks and number 2 in the smartphone market and to be the first Chinese company to sell 100 million phones abroad ". The business volume of Huawei, added Richard Yu, ceo of the consumer branch, grew by 26% in the smartphone sector, by 249% in the computer sector, by 256% in the smart audio sector and by 278% in wearables.

In Italy, Huawei maintains its second position in the market with a market share of 29% and 23.6% in value (Huawei + Honor) and 32.9% of the Android smartphone market. "Europe remains a very important market for us and we remain committed to it in the long term," says Ji. "The fact that our 5G technology is so necessary makes competitors feel uncomfortable. We are one of the most important players in the industry: someone accepts it, someone is afraid of it. We just want to connect people to opportunities. We want to connect those who are left behind because we believe in the ability of technology to bring development to those without access ".

Microsoft to Trump: remove ban on Chinese group
The president of Microsoft presses on the Trump administration to put an end to the ban, adopted last May, which prohibits American companies from selling their products to the Chinese company Huawei. According to Washington, the TLC giant represents a risk to national security but Brad Smith, who is also the lawyer of reference for Microsoft, does not think so. According to him, US security "will not be jeopardized" if the US government allows Huawei to use US-made apps or operating systems. "We believe it would be a mistake to try to raise a new digital iron curtain in the Pacific. I think doing so would brake the United States and the democracies in the world," the expert said in an interview with the BBC. "We are among the companies that have asked the Department of Commerce to be able to continue to supply our software to Huawei devices such as laptops." Last July, the Commerce Department said it would grant licenses to allow equipment to be sold to Huawei as long as it does not threaten US security. Although he has received over a hundred license applications, Wilbur Ross's ministry does not appear to have issued them yet. However, this decision does not affect another prohibition, the one proposed by Trump that prevents Huawei from selling its 5G equipment to US Tlc companies.
