August 10, 2019Huawei has launched a new operating system to bypass US sanctions that effectively prevent the Chinese telecommunications giant from accessing the Android system.

Presenting it was his patron, Richard Yu, at a developer conference in Dongguan, South China: "We named it HarmonyOS. We hope to bring more harmony and ease into the world," Huawei's CEO announced. An easy to use open source system.

"HarmonyOs can be used on different types of devices, including watches, cars, PCs and tablets. If it can be used on smartphones? Of course. If you ask us when we can use it, we can do it, no matter when."

The idea, however, is to wait to test it in mass on mobile phones. "For now we give priority to the Google operating system. But if in the future we will not be able to use Android, we could immediately switch to the HarmonyOS operating system."

"Our operating system HarmonyOS looks to the future, is designed for the generation that will come because it will be compatible with artificial intelligence and with different scenarios."

HarmonyOS, or Hongmeng in Chinese, is an operating system based on microkernel, distributed and designed for various devices and scenarios. "It will be very fast and convenient to transfer the Android operating system to HarmonyOS if it is no longer accessible. It only takes one or two days," said Yu.

According to Yu, over the next three years, the system will be used for more smart devices such as smartwatches and on-board control systems.

"We are entering a phase where people expect a holistic and intelligent experience across all devices and scenarios. In support of this, we considered it important to have an operating system with improved multi-platform capabilities," said Yu.

"We need an operating system that supports all scenarios, that can be used on a wide range of devices and platforms and that can satisfy low latency and high security consumer demand."

Yu said that the development of HarmonyOS will depend on a dynamic ecosystem of applications and developers. "To encourage wider adoption, Huawei will release HarmonyOS as an open source platform worldwide," Yu admitted.

The managing director added that the Chinese company will establish both a foundation and an open source community to support a deeper collaboration with the developers.
