In Honduras, several thousands of people continue to protest this Thursday, June 20 to demand the resignation of President Juan Orlando Hernandez. Important roads are blocked in several cities of the country, including the capital Tegucigalpa. The French Embassy in Honduras Wednesday night recommended its citizens to stay at home and avoid forcing roadblocks. This movement began more than a month and a half ago.
It was the prospect of privatization in the Health and Education sectors that triggered the first demonstrations . But the movement continued even after the withdrawal of these two controversial government decrees.
The protesters now demand the departure of the president, accused of corruption and whose brother is being prosecuted in the United States for large-scale cocaine trafficking. The opposition also accuses Juan Orlando Hernandez of being re- elected for a second term through a series of frauds.
In several major cities in Honduras, including the capital Tegucigalpa, tires and stones were placed across the roads. Many businesses have been vandalized and burned. As a precaution, several universities have decided to suspend classes until further notice.
For several days, truck drivers also blocked access roads to the capital. But they finally got back to work on Thursday after finding an agreement with the government.
More worrying for the authorities: the special anti-riot forces have also pulled back since Wednesday. These police officers say they will refuse to maintain order until they have received salary increases and better working conditions.
