Reached by the peak of the canicular episode across the continent, Europe suffocated Thursday. France, Germany, Austria and the Netherlands were particularly affected. New heat records have been broken.

Historical levels have been reached everywhere on the old continent. The Netherlands broke their record on Wednesday, which already canceled the previous one of 1944, with more than 40 degrees in Amsterdam. The country has never exceeded this symbolic bar until now. The municipal employees of Amsterdam or Haarlem have watered some bridges to fight against the expansion of the metal, reports Pierre Bénazet , our correspondent in Brussels.

The Netherlands was so hot that a TV channel decided to broadcast images of snowy landscapes to refresh its viewers. And another consequence, the Thalys rail company which operates in the Netherlands but also in France, Germany and Belgium, had to close its ticket sales due to disturbances on the network, due to heat. In Belgium also, record breaking with 40.6 degrees in the middle of the afternoon in the province of Limburg.

All of France was hot and hot on Thursday. In Paris, the thermometer flirted with the 43 degrees, a first in the capital. The last heat record was from 1947. To cool off, some went swimming in the fountains of the city. In Honfleur, in Normandy, the mercury has exceeded 38 degrees. Temperatures also exploded in Rouen, where it was above 41 ° C, as in Lille.

Impressive temperatures that once again attest to the extent of global warming suffered by the planet.
