CAIRO (Reuters) - South African referee Victor Gomez has been appointed to lead the final of the African Nations Cup between Algeria and Senegal on Friday at the Cairo International Stadium.

"Gomez was appointed to manage the final of the African Cup of Nations," the official website of the organizing committee said, becoming the first referee from South Africa to run the final of the Nations Cup.

The 37-year-old Gomez has been overly cautious in the management decisions (warnings and expulsions), which is evident in the current tournament in Egypt and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and against Tunisia and Ghana in the quarter-finals.

The South African referee has also played 17 African Champions League games since entering the international list in 2011, warning 33 players and expelling three.

According to local reports, Gomez is dubbed the "penalty king" in South Africa in proportion to being heavily counted in his domestic league matches. The most prominent example of this is the fact that he scored five penalties for the Suns Downs and Ajax Cape Town in the 2013-2014 season.
