Professional since 1988, he became famous by winning the first title in 1991 in Milan beating, in the final at the Assago Forum, the Italian Cristiano Caratti. He played as a left-handed, but he was born right-handed: at age 15, a promising junior, he broke his shoulder in an accident. He did not give up and started from scratch with his left hand.
