A European Parliament committee on Monday (September 30th) rejected the Hungarian and Romanian candidates for the future European Commission on suspicion of conflicts of interest. This is a blow for the President of the Commission Ursula von der Leyen who will take office on 1 November with his team.
The Committee on Legal Affairs " voted that the two appointed Commissioners (Romanian and Hungarian) are not able to perform their duties in accordance with the Treaties and the Code of Conduct, " spokesman Jaume Duch wrote on Twitter .

The same MEPs had already blocked Thursday the nomination of these two candidates, the Romanian Social Democrat Rovana Plumb and the Hungarian Laszlo Trocsanyi (EPP, right), because of alleged conflicts of interest.
No hearing
But Mr Sassoli had asked them to clarify their conclusions, which forced them to a new vote on Monday. " This vote confirmed that the two commissioners could not exercise their function, " insisted Manon Aubry, member of the European Unity Left (GUE) and member of the commission.
Consequently, they " will not be able to hold this week their hearing " in front of the MEPs, unlike the other Commissioners appointed for the next Commission which will take office on 1 November.
Ms. Plumb, who seeks the portfolio of Transport, is in the visor of Parliament for two loans in dispute. Trocsanyi, who is targeting Enlargement's portfolio, was asked about his relationship with the law firm he founded in 1991 before becoming Viktor Orban's Justice Minister.
