The 26-year-old English international has become the most expensive defender in the world with a transfer amount to Manchester United of 80 million pounds.

Leicester's English international defender Harry Maguire has signed up for Manchester United for the next six seasons (plus an optional one), the two clubs announced on Monday.

The amount of this transfer has not been officially communicated but according to the British media, the 26-year-old has become the most expensive defender in the world with a transfer amount of 80 million pounds (87 million euros) .

The arrival of Maguire at Manchester United should clear the records of the Dutch Matthijs de Ligt, Ajax Amsterdam to Juventus Turin (75 million euros, plus 10.5 bonus in July), and Virgil van Dijk from Southampton to Liverpool (75 million in January 2018). Maguire is the third Mancunian summer rookie after right-wing Aaron Wan-Bissaka (Crystal Palace) and winger Daniel James (Swansea) arrive.

"It's the perfect defender"

"Harry is one of the best central defenders in football today and I'm glad we got his signature," said his new coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. "He has a good playing record and a strong presence on the pitch, he stays calm under pressure and keeps his cool with the ball, he has a huge presence in the area. [...] He has great personality and it's a fantastic reinforcement for the club, "added the Norwegian technician.

"He is an exceptional defender, and a boy of absolute kindness who is one of the best central defenders in the world. It's the perfect defender: solid, good in the duel, with a superb head game", also salute at the microphone of Europe 1 Jacky Bonnevay who knew Harry Maguire at the club of Leicester, where he was assistant coach Claude Puel. "I see very little fault, he may not have an exceptional race speed," he notes. But "it will have no difficulty to win at Manchester United," says the former footballer.

Arrived in 2017 from Hull City, Maguire has 69 Premier League matches in the Leicester jersey. He participated in the England team's good run at the 2018 World Cup, allowing the "Three Lions" to reach the semi-finals.
