Several hundred protesters took to the streets of Cairo and Alexandria on the night of Friday 20 to Saturday 21 September to denounce the corruption of power and the stranglehold of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

Egyptian opposition dominated by the Muslim Brotherhood had launched a call on social networks and media outlets from Turkey to take to the streets on Friday to start a new revolution against the power of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

A call to which hundreds of very young opponents responded in the early hours of Saturday. Hundreds gathered around Tahrir Square, the symbolic place from which the uprising that led to the fall of Hosni Mubarak began. Although demonstrations were quickly dispersed, this is the first time since President Sissi's re-election in 2018 that protests against power have been taking place in Egypt. It is also the first time since his election in 2014 that the Egyptian president is personally attacked by protesters demanding his departure.

Several people were arrested Friday in Cairo while they were demonstrating, according to AFP journalists there.
