by Tiziana Di Giovannandrea 12 October 2019The Ecuadorian president Lenín Moreno decreed a "curfew" and a "militarization" in the metropolitan district of Quito to help security forces quell the violent protests on the tenth day of protest by the indigenous population.

"I organized the curfew and the militarization of the metropolitan district of Quito and the valleys. This will make it easier for the security forces to act in the face of intolerable excesses of violence," the president said in a message on social networks.

Moreno's decision comes despite the announcement by the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE), that he has agreed to participate in the "direct dialogue" proposed by Lenín Moreno himself for a solution to the crisis in the country.

The violent protests are born to challenge the economic austerity policy fielded by the Head of State in exchange for the granting of a loan of 4.2 billion dollars by the International Monetary Fund.

In particular, the protesters demand the repeal of the law approved last week that puts an end to the subsidies for fuel.
