May 10, 2018Capannanated thirty years on appeal, Vincenzo Paduano, the ex-vigilante accused of killing and burning his ex-girlfriend, Sara Di Pietrantonio, on May 29, 2016.

The confirmation of life imprisonment imposed in the first instance is what the prosecutor asked for the man who two years ago in Via della Magliana, Rome, set fire to the girl, just twenty, after strangling her.

The defense thesis
The defense was pressing for the acquittal of Paduano from the crimes of stalking and destruction of corpse , but above all because he was not recognized the aggravating circumstance of premeditation. According to the defense lawyer Flora Divizia, in fact, the alcohol contained in the bottle that Paduano had brought with him that day was little and had to serve only to damage the girl's machine not to set fire to anything else ".

As for the other aggravating circumstance, for futile reasons, the defense spoke of Vincenzo Paduano as "victim of jealousy". A jealousy has become so unbearable as to reach the tragic gesture. A report, the one between Vincenzo and Sara, made of continuous arguments and discussions: "The two of them always had a thousand messes and each time they came back together", explained the defense. "But from the messages that the two wrote to each other, Sara had never expressed fear towards Vincenzo."

The prosecution's argument
On the other hand, the prosecutor Maria Gabriella Fazi, according to whom the premeditation was and emerged from the fact that Paduano before carrying out the murder, had bothered to leave the phone and tablet at work. "The girl - said today before the Fazi judges - was wet with gasoline from head to toe. Paduano also burned the body on the dry leaves to destroy Sara".

The alcohol contained in the bottle, in short, would have served to clean up the rot to be eradicated and make "tabula rasa". On the futile grounds he insisted the accusation, which spoke of an extreme gesture due to the sudden loss of power and control of Paduano over the victim whom he considered to be "his property".

The repentance of Paduano
"I cannot deserve peace. I will never forgive myself for what I have done: I have taken away from Sara the possibility of being happy, the greatest punishment is the suffering that I carry inside and not the prison", said Paduano in the classroom making spontaneous statements to the Court.

Sara's mother's reaction
Satisfaction on the part of Concetta Raccuia, mother of Sara Di Pietrantonio, after the sentence of 30 years for Vincenzo Paduano. "There is no big difference between 30 years and life imprisonment," he said. "Maybe I can seem cynical - he added - but I don't think Paduano has repented: I think that to get to true repentance he will have to be helped a lot again because he can't do it alone". On the tears of the 28-year-old vigilante, who cried on several occasions during today's hearing, Raccuia says: "He cried for himself I would say, because it is a very harsh sentence".
