Damascus announces a ceasefire in the Idelb region of northwestern Syria. A region pounded for three months by the Syrian regime and its Russian ally.
The province of Idleb is controlled by the jihadists of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham , the former Syrian branch of al-Qaeda. Other factions and rebel groups are also present.
According to the official Sana agency, Damascus announces that it has accepted a ceasefire from tonight, but a conditional ceasefire. Provided that the de-escalation agreement concluded last September between Russia and Turkey is applied.
An agreement planned to create a demilitarized zone at Idleb , which was to serve as a buffer between the territories controlled by the insurgents and those held by the regime. As a result of this agreement, Damascus has not conducted a major offensive. But this agreement has so far only been partially respected, as the jihadists have not withdrawn.
Russia welcomed the announcement of the ceasefire by its special envoy for Syria, Alexander Lavrentiev, who expressed doubts about the jihadists' respect for the truce, saying that Idleb was "unheard of ".
In three months of bombing, since late April, more than 400,000 people out of three million inhabitants have had to flee their homes in this province of Idelb. 770 civilians were killed.
