Jens Nygaard Knudsen, who designed the iconic doll of the Danish firm Lego, has died at 78, of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a colleague of his reported.

The designer died after having entered the treatment center for this degenerative disease a week ago, explained Niels Milan Pedersen, who worked with him in Lego.

"His imagination was fantastic. His brain was like a hurricane, he had so many ideas ," Milan Pedersen told AFP.

Nygaard Knudsen worked at Lego between 1968 and 2000, and in the 1970s he worked on the figurine with movable arms and legs , until it was released in 1978.

According to Lego, when the doll was created it was decided that apart from his yellow face, with a happy expression, he would not have sex or race, so that it would be "determined by the child's imagination or play."

" He was a man of ideas. The doll was created to have life in homes , " he said his widow, Marianne Nygaard Knudsen, the broadcaster TV2.

Founded in 1932 by Ole Kirk Christiansen, Lego began to take off as a major international brand of construction toys from 1958. It currently employs more than 17,000 people.
