Journalist and blogger Daphne Caruana Galicia was killed in the explosion of her car in Bidnija, in the north-central part of Malta. The journalist was the holder of the inquiry into MaltaFiles: she had investigated the involvement of local personalities in the so-called Panama Papers. Maltese Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, the subject of the journalist's investigations, condemned the "barbaric attack", which he said was shocked: "I will not stop until justice is done. The country deserves justice," said Muscat.

It was a bomb that caused the powerful explosion that littered the wreckage of the journalist's car, a Peugeot 108, in the surrounding area. The TVM broadcaster reports that the journalist reported to the police 15 days ago that she had been threatened.

Galicia lived in Bidnija, a short distance from the site of the explosion. She was known for her surveys and her blog 'Running Commentary'. He started his career in 1987 for the Sunday edition of the Times of Malta, and later became co-director of the Malta Independent, in which he later moved into the role of editorialist. He also directed the magazine Taste & Flair.

But it was his blog that projected it at the center of public attention. The Maltese journalist was the first to give the news of the involvement of Konrad Mizzi and Keith Schembri ', respectively Chief of Staff of Muscat and Minister of Energy and Health, in the Panama Papers. Daphne Caruana Galicia had also conducted investigations on former opposition leader Busuttil.

This year, the journalist through her blog claimed that the Panamanian company Egrant was owned by Michelle Muscat, wife of the Maltese prime minister. The scandal had led to early June elections, won again by Laborers in Muscat, who along with his wife denied any wrongdoing.

Holder of an independent international investigation, according to which "Malta acts as a pirate base for EU tax evasion", was named "a Wikileaks woman" by Politico, who had included her among the 28 personalities who "are waving 'Europe".

The president of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani, condemned what he called the "brutal murder of Daphne Caruana Galicia". It is "a tragic example of a journalist who sacrificed his life in search of the truth. It will not be forgotten," Tajani wrote in his Twitter account.
