For the first time in 41 years, Uganda has passed the first round of an African Cup of Nations. In the round of 16 of this 2019 edition, the "Cranes" find themselves facing the ambitious Senegal. A meeting to follow this Friday, July 5 at the International Stadium in Cairo at 19h UT and Dakar time (21h in Paris, 22h in Kampala).

Uganda is returning to the past. In 1978, the East African selection reached the final of the African Cup of Nations and lost to Ghana. And then, the "Cranes" have lived a long crossing of the desert, between packages and inability to find the highest African level. In 2017, the flame returned: Uganda qualified for the finals but did not pass the first round. And in this CAN 2019 , the goal was reached: finishing second in group A behind Egypt and in front of the DRC, the team coached by Sebastien Desabre got his ticket to the knockout stages.

A great performance for captain Denis Onyango and his partners, who are asking for more. They are served this Friday, July 5, because it is Senegal that stands on their way. This time, there will be no reprieve: with the end of the first round begins the phase of knockout matches. So there will be tension and pressure at the international stadium in Cairo, the scene of the eighth finals.

Senegal also finished in second place in their group, the C, behind the intractable Algeria and in front of the unfortunate Kenya, eliminated in the first round against the goal difference. The Lions won against the Kenyans and the Tanzanians, but they lost to the Fennecs in what was one of the shocks of this early CAN. Can Aliou Cissé and his men really afford their ambitions? This Uganda-Senegal will provide some of the answers.
