An attack on a synagogue and a Turkish restaurant left two dead and two seriously injured Wednesday in Halle, eastern Germany. The alleged perpetrator was arrested.

Emmanuel Macron condemned "strongly" on Thursday the attack on a synagogue in Halle (Germany) that left two dead and two wounded, lamenting an "anti-Semitic attack".

"Halle's anti-Semitic attack is shocking, we strongly condemn it," the head of state wrote on Twitter. "I express my full support to the Jewish community on this day of Yom Kippur, my solidarity with Germany, my thoughts to the families of the victims and their loved ones," he added.

The attack was perpetrated by a heavily armed man, dressed in fatigues and wearing a helmet, whose modus operandi recalls the attack on two mosques in Christchurch (New Zealand) in March by an Australian far right. The German police announced in the evening to have arrested a man injured in an exchange of fire with the police. Interior Minister Horst Seehofer spoke of an "anti-Semitic attack" for which a "far-right" sympathizer is suspected.
