The country's interior minister Arturo Murillo accuses Morales of having stirred up the violent riots in which 35 people lost their lives. According to authorities, the president ordered his supporters to blockade cities to force the interim president Jeanine Áñez.
After weeks of opposition-led protests that threatened to degenerate into violence, Morales resigned last month from his post and fled to Mexico. After also living in Cuba, he took refuge in Argentina, where he received asylum.
According to Argentine media, Morales resides his closest associate in San Ramón de la Nueva Orán in Salta - just a few miles from the border and thus just out of reach for the long arm of the Bolivian team.
New elections are now awaiting in Bolivia, where Evo Morales still has strong support in sections of the population. However, he is stopped from being drafted by a new law passed by interim president Jeanine Áñez, and has self-withdrawn his candidacy.
