Andrés Gimeno, champion of Ronald Garros in 1972, has died this noon at 82 after a long illness. The Barcelona player was the oldest winner of the 'Open Era' on clay in Paris, 34 years old. In addition, he was a finalist in the Australian Open (1969) and a semifinalist in Wimbledon (1970) and won four ATP tournaments.
Gimeno retired from tennis in 1973, just one year after winning in Paris. However, he remained hooked on the world of racket as he was a television commentator, as well as a columnist for the newspaper Marca.
