The Ali-Boudoukha Prize, intended to reward the best investigative articles in Algeria, was awarded on December 21 to freelance journalist Lyas Hallas.
The 2019 Ali-Boudoukha Prize was awarded to journalist Lyas Hallas, an energy specialist. This award, created by the Maghreb Émergent newspaper and endowed with a scholarship funded by members of the public, is awarded each year to an Algerian investigative journalist.
" The investigation is a journey towards a truth, " said Lyas Hallas to RFI. It is a job that requires a lot of patience, a lot of method. It's a job that fascinates me, trying to understand better, to know, not to limit myself to making news . I would say there is space to investigate, to do its job properly. "
" Certainly, it is difficult. It's not an easy task, but there is space to do it. We must not give up because there is intimidation, legal proceedings. But these things should be approached with a little serenity, because these are the same difficulties that we share with colleagues around the world. Algeria is not the most difficult country for journalism. "
Member of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, Lyas Hallas is also a former correspondent for Radio France Internationale in Algeria, where he worked under the name of Amar Ben Salem.
