A small private plane chartered for a medical evacuation caught fire Sunday at takeoff in Manila (Philippines). The eight people on board - six Filipino crew members and two passengers, an American and a Canadian - died.

Open investigation

The Westwind type airplane was to go to Japan. The airport firefighters intervened, but the aircraft, on the runway, was already engulfed in flames. "Unfortunately, there were no survivors," said Manila airport manager Ed Monreal during a press conference. An investigation was opened to determine the origin of the fire.

Commercial air traffic from Manila has also been suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic.
