Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun fled from Saudi Arabia to Thailand almost a week ago for fear of her own family. She documented her escape via Twitter and became world famous within days. Now she has left the Asian country with a plane to Canada.
The 18-year-old was stopped by Thai immigration authorities at Bangkok Airport last weekend while fleeing from her family. According to their own information, she wanted to apply for asylum in Australia. Now she will do so, according to the Reuters news agency in Canada.
Rahaf was able to prevent her deportation to Saudi Arabia with the help of a quick Twitter account, which was soon followed by 100,000 users. Until departure, she was in the care of the United Nations refugee agency UNHCR in Bangkok.
Her Twitter account switched her off on Friday. "I have some good news and some bad news," she wrote shortly after, her account was disabled. According to Human Rights Watch, Rahaf had previously received death threats.
