75 years since the liberation of the Auschwitz Holocaust camp

The anniversary of this particular date is due to the same date as the Nazi extermination camp Auschwitz Birkenau in Poland was liberated in 1945.

This year is 75 years ago, and around the world the anniversary is celebrated. Memories have already been held before the date itself. Earlier this week, Prime Minister Stefan Löfven (S) visited Israel for a major event in Jerusalem.

There, leaders from all over the world had met under the heading "Remembering the Holocaust, Fighting Anti-Semitism". Both to remember the liberation of the camps in 1945, but also to discuss anti-Semitism today.

"It is a very powerful experience of one of humanity's perhaps darkest periods," Löfven told TT during the visit.

- The Holocaust is, of course, and we must dare and dare to take on the awfulness, the violence and the humiliation and perhaps most importantly, that this was not something that just came with Nazi Germany, that it was only Nazis in uniform, but it was even ordinary people who contribute to anti-Semitism.

When the UN in 2005 declared January 27 as an International Memorial Day, it had already been a memorial day in Sweden for several years. Memorial Day is also celebrated in many places around Sweden, including events and exhibitions.
