On January 17, 1945, units of the Red Army and Polish Army liberated Warsaw from the Nazi occupiers. The capital of Poland has been under the control of the Nazis since September 28, 1939. More than a third of the city’s inhabitants (about 440 thousand people) were forcibly placed by the Nazis in the Jewish ghetto. Against the background of rumors of his liquidation, the prisoners in April 1943 revolted, which was brutally crushed. The second uprising in Warsaw was initiated by the Polish government in exile in 1944 to prevent the liberation of the city by Soviet troops, but its Nazis also suppressed. In the summer and autumn of 1944, as part of Operation Bagration, units of the Red Army and the Polish Army reached the Warsaw suburbs on the right bank of the Vistula, however, due to extended communications and troop fatigue from a long offensive, they were unable to take the city on the move. It was possible to achieve success already during the Vistula-Oder operation.
