To the southeast of Nablus governorate in the northern West Bank, the 13,000 Palestinian residents of Beita town are waging a battle of existence against the settlers' greed for their lands and properties, as they face settlement plans to devour the remaining spaces in their town.

The most dangerous of these projects is the establishment of a colonial outpost on the top of Jabal Sabih, which is in the middle of the town of Beita, which has an area of 18,000 dunams. Last May, settlers built more than 20 mobile homes (caravans), connecting electricity and water services to it, and paving. Roads within the focus in a few days.

confiscation and confiscation

The former mayor of Beita, Fouad Maali, said in an exclusive interview with "Emirates Today": "The town of Beita until May of 2021 was completely free of settlement, until the outpost called (Avitar) was established, despite the fact that the lands perched on it The focus belongs to (Beta) and the villages of (Tima) and (Qabalan) south of Nablus.”

He explains that the area on which the outpost is built is 20 dunums, but it confiscates 800 dunums of Palestinian agricultural lands in Jabal Sabih and Beita town, noting that 95% of it is planted with olive trees.

Maali points out that the outpost perched on the high hills of Jabal Sobeih, causes severe misery for the residents of Beita town, as it will deprive them of entering their agricultural lands, adding, “Directly under the focus is the industrial zone of Beta town, which includes all kinds of crafts and stone factories, where workers in the area are exposed of beatings and death threats by armed settlers.

The former mayor of Beita points out that the settlers, from the moment they settled on the lands of Jabal Sobeih, opened sewage channels towards the industrial area in the town of Beita.

It shows that the goal of the settlement outpost is to separate the north of the West Bank from its south, as the town of Beita is located in the middle, and with the establishment of the outpost, it will be linked to the settlement of "Kfar Taffouh" west of Nablus, which is located next to the Za'tara military checkpoint.

Maali continues by saying: "In this way, the settlers control the movement of the population, and this outpost overlooks several neighboring villages, which facilitates the monitoring of the residents and restricts their movement, preventing them from entering and leaving if necessary."

Confrontations and attacks

As a result of the settlement plan on the hills of Jabal Sobeih, the people of Beita rushed to defend it and protect their lands from confiscation, in refusal to establish the outpost that would pave the way for the establishment of a settlement on the lands of the mountain owned by Palestinian citizens south of Nablus Governorate.

The former mayor of Beita says: "The residents of Beita town sprang to protect their land, from the moment the outpost was established, so that the settlers would not attack the rest of their agricultural lands, which constitute their livelihood."

According to Maali, the residents were subjected to the attacks of the occupation and settlers to break up the peaceful demonstrations, and as a result, two martyrs from the town rose, who rose up to defend their land from the settlers’ greed. The citizen Issa Daoud (40 years old), who works as a prosecutor, and the young man Zakaria Maher Hamayel were martyred ( 28 years old), an Arabic language teacher.

He points out that the confrontations in the town of Beita since the establishment of the "Avitar" settlement outpost are still ongoing, and have spread to the main street of Beita, as the occupation closed the town's entrances and exits with earth mounds, and prevented the movement of residents.

ambitions

Despite the news circulating about the decision of the occupation authorities, on Monday, July 7, 2021, to evacuate the settlement outpost built on the lands of Jabal Sobeih in the town of Beita within eight days, the residents of Beita warn that the current events on the ground do not indicate its removal, but rather they warn From expanding the focus, by providing support to the occupation.

A member of the Political Bureau of the Democratic Front in the city of Nablus, Mahmoud Dweikat, points out that since 1985 the occupation and its settlers have been planning to extend their Judaization ambitions on Jabal Sobeih, by setting up tents and mobile rooms to control it, and transforming the mountain's agricultural lands into a settlement.

Dweikat goes on to say in an exclusive interview with Emirates Today: “In 1988, the first Jewish religious trip was organized to the lands of Jabal Arma, opposite Jabal Sabih, where they set up tents on top of the mountain, while the people of the town confronted them, but settlement plans are still continuing at an increasing pace until Today, where the outpost (Avitar) is set up.”

He shows that what is happening in “Jabal Sabih” is an attempt to establish a settlement outpost in the vital area overlooking the city of Nablus and its villages, and close to the Za’tara military checkpoint, which connects the north of the West Bank to its south, pointing out that the “Avitar” outpost is located within the framework of the occupation annexation to expand the existing settlements. and establishing new settlements.

A member of the Political Bureau of the Democratic Front says: "We will continue the popular resistance until the focus is removed, in addition to confronting the new project between the towns of (Beta) and (Hawara), where the establishment of a settlement street devouring thousands of lands planted with olive trees."

He added, "The settlement street isolates the two towns from each other, and from their Palestinian surroundings. It will also represent a link point between the Za'tara checkpoint and isolates the north of the West Bank from its south."

• Since 1985, the occupation and its settlers have been planning to extend their Judaization ambitions on "Jabal Sabih", by setting up tents and mobile rooms to control it, and to turn the mountain's agricultural lands into a settlement.

• As a result of the settlement plan on the hills of “Jabal Sobeeh,” the people of Beita town rushed to defend it and protect their lands from confiscation, refusing to establish the outpost that would pave the way for the establishment of a settlement on the lands of the mountain owned by Palestinian citizens, south of Nablus Governorate.
