“Economy and Tourism”: “Calling” on shoppers in shopping centers is a violation and annoying promotion

The Commercial Control and Consumer Protection Sector in the Department of Economy and Tourism in Dubai reported that 572 awareness and inspection visits were carried out on a number of commercial kiosks in the emirate, especially those located in commercial centers, to educate them about the laws and requirements for doing business, and to ensure their commitment to the activity permitted in the trade license.

The sector stressed that the visit also aimed to reduce the annoying promotion of services and products, by calling out consumers, and other illegal and civilized methods.

The Director of the Commercial Control Department in the Commercial Control and Consumer Protection Sector, Abdulaziz Al-Tanak, said that organizing these inspection campaigns aims to provide an enjoyable shopping experience for shoppers, and reduce the phenomenon of “calling” in the corridors and sides of commercial centers in an uncivilized manner.

He stressed that these practices cause inconvenience to consumers and tourists visiting malls in Dubai, warning that they may harm merchants and other shops, as merchants complain about this phenomenon as it affects consumers' demand for their shops.

He called on the owners of commercial establishments that focus on these negative phenomena as a basic method for marketing their services and products, to develop them in a way that does not disturb the public, and to be careful not to cause them inconvenience, to avoid obtaining any fines in the event of repetition, as they are obligated to respect the privacy of consumers.

He stressed the continuity of organizing these campaigns and awareness-raising inspection visits to the emirate's markets, pointing out that merchants who do not adhere to instructions regarding annoying promotion and sales by calling will be violated, in order to provide a safe and encouraging economic environment for traders and investors.

The Department of Economy and Tourism called on consumers to report any complaint they have about their shopping experience through the “Dubai Consumer” application, or by calling: (600545555), or via the consumerrights.ae website.
