May 2020 <SDF2020 theme grand release!

What is the most important topic of the times now?

The weekly newsletter of'SBS D Forum', which took its first step with Ep.0>,'SDF Diary' celebrated its 1st anniversary.

The readership of <SDF Diary> has more than doubled compared to this time of last year, thanks to many people's steadfast interest and word of mouth throughout the year.

Today, from the secret story of the birth of the'SDF Newsletter', which started with another experiment and challenge of the'SBS D Forum', the representative social contribution forum of SBS, the corona era seen through the'SDF Diary', a characteristic of knowledge that has attracted more attention to people. I looked into what is.

On the 27th of last month, four writers from SDF Diary (SBS Future Team reporter Jeongae Lee, reporter Lee Jonghoon, reporter Ryu Ran, and artist Yejin Choi) gathered in one place.

It was a place to look into the SDF newsletter of the past year and look back on the direction to go forward.

Reporter Jong-hoon Lee, who is in charge of the series'Our Attitude toward Infectious Diseases' series, which is the original SDF content, was in charge.

Reporter Lee Jong-hoon

:

I compiled a list of diaries from the past year. There were about 50 episodes. From May last year to October 30, when the SBS D Forum (SDF) was held, the efforts that continued while communicating and empathizing with readers on the subject of real SDF were reflected all the time. By the way, I joined in December of last year and I am curious about the background of the newsletter's birth. I'm also curious about the secret story of the name'SDF Diary'.

Reporter Lee Jung-ae

: When we first started discussing the newsletter, I looked for the minutes of the meeting and found it on December 17, 2019. At that time, I wasn't trying to do a'newsletter' right away.

There were

some sayings, "Even though the content of SDF content is good, it is a little waste to see that it is only known as a forum once a year

." From 2004 to 2011, there was a time when the forum was over and I worked on books. After posting all the forum videos on YouTube, I stopped working on books anymore. I remember that writer Ye-jin brought out'Newsletter' at that meeting.

Choi Ye Jin artists

:

the SDF is inde "Knowledge Sharing Platform" If I rattling a year, be recognized only in projects that once steadily continue could preach

La time to start getting the while thinking popular some format called "newsletter" Then we again I hope to do it. I thought that way. But what's a little different from now is that I actually thought of'Monthly'.

Reporter Lee Jong-hoon

:'Not weekly, but'monthly'?

Writer Choi Ye-jin

: Yes, we originally dealt with a forum intensively once a year, so it was a month when'Monthly Yoon Jong Shin' was also popular, and I thought it would be good to do it in a magazine format, but if the team members would do it, it should be weekly. They said that, so I ended up doing'weekly'.

▲ SBS Future Team's newsletter'SDF Diary' planning SDF, which began on May 7, 2020

The reason why I came up with the idea of the newsletter as'Diary' is that our team has a goal of creating a forum anyway.

On the day of the forum, everyone will be gathered together to talk, but since all the talks in the

preparation process are part of the topic in a large framework,

how about writing

"diary"

in terms

of sharing the'records of the process of creating the SDF forum'

? I made it.

Reporter Jong-Hoon Lee

: I think there is a lot of meaning in making newsletters every week, asking subscribers for their opinions and seeing their reactions. What has changed in the direction or direction from what you thought at the beginning?

Writer Choi Ye-jin

: At first, I mainly wrote, but once a week came so often it was difficult.

Reporter Lee Jung-ae

: Actually, if it wasn't just Corona, we had a plan to hold a mini-lecture called'D Salon' on the last Friday of every month and write it with it. However, with the outbreak of Corona 19, it was impossible to proceed. Also, in the early days, it was hoped that companies could deal with a lot of new experiments and attempts that were meaningfully challenging, but such things were not easy in the situation where they were living at home with Corona. Instead, before and really different, and I suffered How to fit the natural world without ever interested

more focused on finding the essential questions such as "How do you go to live differently."

I guess it makes. In fact, I think people began to pay more attention to philosophical questions based on reality as well as the SDF2020 lecture by Yuval Harari, the author of'Sapiens', who was the keynote speaker of our SDF D Forum last year.

Reporter Ryu Ran

: I learned the first time I was able to introduce (newsletter). Still, the reason we were able to make a soft landing in a difficult situation was that we were able

to make our own content to be able to create our own content by interviewing the CP of Kwak Seung-young and Kim Soo-hyun, who were making new attempts

in

SBS

.

Reporter Lee Jong-hoon

: At that time, weren't Kwak Seung-young CP and others already confirmed as speakers?

Reporter Lee Jung-ae

: It wasn't until then. As reporter Ryu Ran came to our team, it became a situation where we could try such an interview, and after the interview, I thought that the content was so good that I was hired as a speaker later.

Reporter Ryu Ran

: From the point of view of the reporter who wrote the article, the newsletter was a bit confused as it was both an article and a blog-like conversation. In fact, I think it was from this year that I began to think about the personality and identity of our newsletter in earnest. There were about 20 newsletters I was subscribed to, but now I'm seeing an additional 2-30. As a result, I started to see the location of the'SDF Diary' within the entire terrain of the newsletter.

Reporter Lee Jong-hoon

: As the number of writers increased to 4, it seems that there was another room to worry about.

Reporter Ryu Ran

: Yes, it was only then that I

realized that'Our

content is a bit long','Most of us are

curating news

'

or'Companies

and schools are making newsletters for the effect of publicity'. I think it was the first time to think about our location and characteristics.

Reporter Lee Jung-ae

:

Reporter

Ryu Ran came to our team and the other thing I liked was that we kept talking so much to each other that it feels natural to us. Reporter Ryu was in a different department until a while ago

, so "Senior, I'm not sure because I'm talking about this suddenly. I kept raising questions like ", "I don't understand why I'm dealing with this here."

For example,'Anthropology Tax' If you say that, why is the Anthropocene dealt with suddenly in SDF? How is it connected? When I asked, the

connection

It seems that we were also considering more.

Reporter Ryu Ran

: Before I joined this team, I saw'SDF2018' and'SDF2019' as a colleague and outsider at the press headquarters. The feeling I had at that time was that there were

people who were hard

to

meet, and the depth of discussion was considerable. However, the forum's approach is a bit sudden enough to threaten all these advantages, so it's a big chunk to get all of this delivered and understood in one day. I know what you mean, but there are books that are difficult to understand because you don't know the context. SDF was just that

. It's been a while since we started the newsletter, and I think a lot of non-newsletter subscribers will attend this year's forum. Nevertheless, to those who have always watched our newsletter with interest,

'being

able

to create a context and explain in advance the fundamental concerns of our social issues dealt with in the forum'

seems to be the biggest role of the diary right now.

Artist Choi Ye-jin

:

Creating

something like

a'connection

'

...

Reporter Lee Jong-hoon

: Still, the diary is

celebrating a

year. I'm curious if you think you've grown a little.

Reporter Ryu Ran

: In the early days, the

author

mainly used it. Last year, when I joined this team, I wrote it together. Starting this year, two journalists joined the group, and the number of writers increased to four. The best part is that more people can share their concerns and share their opinions. For example,

there is a

copyright issue when choosing

an

image for a

newsletter

. Our newsletter is an email-based service, not SBS homepage or broadcasting. As a result, I was confused as to whether I should apply the rules or find another way to do it, just like when I wrote an article. Also, as many of our subscribers are in academia, I had a responsibility to know and write the context accurately when citing a paper. Since this year, most of the copyright issues have been organized while discussing with the legal team, and while

fixing the'interview format' in the newsletter, we are cross-checking the facts of the newsletter body through experts.

In many ways, I feel that the situation is better than last year.

Writer Choi Ye-jin

: But, a little bit of anxiety, but looking at the recent feedback, our newsletter

is longer than other newsletters, so from the point of view of the recipient, I feel like I need to spend a lot of time, so I can't actually read it until the end. There are many cases.

That's the essential problem of SDF, but since we aim for'goqual', how to balance falling into the trap of too seriousness seems to be one of the homework we have to solve. The good feedback is that an acquaintance is subscribed to it, but he is

too busy to know what's important to the world and how it works, but it's difficult to know, but because he sent me something deep like this, "Oh, this is a hot topic! I have to see something like this these days!" He said that he was grateful for being able to keep his thoughts with him.

I thought that even

if the subscribers looked closely at ours, they wouldn't be far behind in the world

, so it was good because it seemed to convey our sincerity.

Reporter Ryu Ran

: I sympathize with the concerns that our content is rather long. The materials and methods we deal with are differentiated in many ways compared to other newsletters. There are a lot of subjects that can be covered in conferences, but it is different in that there is a popular approach and explanation, and a lot of images are used.

It seems to be

different in

that it

deals with the academic and the latest trends in a fusion

.

Reporter Lee Jung-ae

: There are actually a lot of professors who have subscribed to our newsletter. In particular, as we interview experts directly

and combine them with

practical knowledge

rather than academic perspectives or

real-world issues in society, in that sense,

we deal

with

real-world knowledge

and ask

topics

or questions that can be applied whether it is policy or real life. It seems to be attracting attention in terms of. One of the most grateful feedbacks I've received is that all news and other newsletters only deal with mainstream stories,

"I feel like SDF always deals with things I think I'm missing out on. There was a

person who said,

"

It's

nice to feel different because it feels like it's coming

." Thank you very much.

Reporter Lee Jong-hoon

:

I think it would be nice if our newsletter was in such a position as'the role of intellectual vitamins'. As you said before, the world is very busy, but when we open it once a week, the letter we send gives you a point to think about, throws out a topic... and I think about it while reading things that I knew roughly but didn't think much about. Feeling to organize it? Oh... there's a context like this. I think it would be nice if we could play that role.

Reporter Ryu Ran

: The market is flooded with newsletters, and 200 or 300 emails are piled up even if you don't check emails for just one day. In this situation, I think I should ask an advisor on whether SDF Diary has succeeded in branding. Before this meeting, I received feedback from fellow reporters, and they said, "If I don't think it's really necessary, I won't open it." Maybe that's our limit. Other newsletters seem to be succeeding in the so-called'title business' that prevents them from being released without clicking on them.

Writer Choi Ye-jin:

But should we say that it is very difficult to digest if we give the title too honestly... I think there is such a thing as well. So

, how relevant it is to me or to my job, this should be felt just by looking at the title, but if we say that the title is too soft and good, it seems that there is a feeling that there is a'culture', but there is a feeling that does not pull it.

I think this is a very important point.

We joke that we are people who are not good at business. Even with the title

, there seems to be an assignment that requires

a little more subscribers

.

Reporter Lee Jung-ae

: There are still a number of things that need to be improved, but I think the newsletter did a great job. When I started last year, I said, "Can we really do it?" I had the idea of doing it, and there were obviously difficulties with the small number of people. Still, looking into the second year, there is definitely another platform compared to when there was no one, so it seems that there are certain things that I feel more familiar with as it is repeatedly exposed to individuals every week rather than when only touching posters in the hallway once a year.

Reporter Ryu Ran

: It seems that even within the press headquarters, it is a bit lively and gives the feeling of continuing to do something. Since the topics we are dealing with are the latest information, there seems to be a part where it is beginning to give a younger feeling.

Reporter Lee Jong-hoon

: What are the most memorable newsletters you have ever written?

Yijeongae Reporter

: I personally gimwonyoung lawyers interviewed details of

"the power to take the rattling '

remains a lot of memories to be saying that, last year, we have but touched on in the art project" pereumata (pause) "

When I step slowly, yet it live as Could it be?

I think it is very meaningful in that I started to bring out the

topic

of

the times

from the mass media

about what I can do

if

I

have to live differently than before

.

Writer Choi Ye-jin

: I remember the newsletter titled'Protect the Distance', which was covered as the 16th newsletter. While dealing with the conflict over the wearing of masks, the concern that distance distancing can lead to burnout was communicated through a study by Professor Yu Myung-soon of the Graduate School of Public Health at Seoul National University. Looking at it now, should I say that it's a bit sad that it's just before the distant and burnout-related explosion? I thought that I could try to deal with this issue once again. And as for the recent one, Professor Joo-ho Kim's AI-related interview was personally impressive. I wasn't really close to machines, so I was very afraid of how to live in the AI era, but I think it was good because there were a lot of newly established things while organizing the interview.

Reporter Ryu Ran

: I'm

the'Between

Hero and Labor' about Corona 19 quarantine personnel. At that time, it started with a questioning awareness that our society was actually forcing sacrifices while calling the coronavirus quarantine personnel as heroes. I thought it would be nice to have the voices of the scene, so I asked for written interviews with epidemiological investigators following the movement of the confirmed people in the actual Gyeonggi area. But when I read, he wrote it so that I felt a sense of duty. I've become serious and I remember being grateful.

Reporter Lee Jung-ae

: I also liked that reporter Ryu Ran's'Metaverse' or'Bukkae' was unfolded from our point of view. Personally, Professor Peter Singer, I am such a great scholar and thank you for taking the interview so easily. I read this book'Animal Liberation' for an interview, and after interviewing him for over an hour, I personally love meat. Nevertheless, I started thinking about whether I could actually cut down on meat if possible, and ordered and tried meat made from cell culture. I personally think it's a little special because it's the content that has changed me the most.

Reporter Lee Jong-hoon

: I have interviews with manager Jeong-ae

Lee

.

I think that it is really different from other newsletters that we interview

professors Peter Singer or Professor Wendy Wood, who

we only access with books, and digest them as newsletters by our team.

There are few people in Korea who can do that. I think that it can be a point that can be used to sell with such strengths of our own. I told my seniors before that Dr. Jane Goodall, who is Professor Jae-Chun Choi, made a video call. Dr. Jane Goodall even reads Professor Peter Singer's Animal Liberation and says that her dick began to stop eating meat. So at that time, I thought that Peter Singer was a really great person.

Reporter Ryu Ran

: It would be nice to talk about the fact that we recently started linking our newsletter with SBS coverage files. At first, I started by suggesting that I try to multi-use the same content as a report file (since Ko Cheol-jong likes the contents of the newsletter). Through the brand called'Report File' of the New Media Bureau of the SBS Press Headquarters, it became a path for new people who did not know SDF to enter. I heard it, but I think the effect was good.

Reporter Lee Jung-ae

: Since our content is a little different from the usual news, we also contribute to the diversification of SBS news content, and as it is exposed to the portal, it certainly seems to be good in terms of spreading to more people. Also, it is interesting that the items that people are interested in in the report file and the items that are viewed more in the newsletter are different, so I am trying to analyze them a little.

Reporter Ryu Ran

: Even when we usually hold meetings, there was a difficult part because there was no specific data. It is not easy to receive feedback such as comments or views from the standpoint of doing a forum once a year, but the comments posted on the report file become data and are very good. Sometimes people come to know something like,'People are interested in these subjects and topics right now.' It seems that there is also a role of a window to communicate with the public.

Reporter Lee Jong-hoon

: What I used to find and write an item myself was about Dr. Jane Goodall, Professor Choi Jae-cheon, and Mars. Professor Jae-Chun Choi is a well-known person, so in terms of how to arouse a little more interest, I woven the relationship between Dr. Jane Goodall and the two. As that happens, the fields that subscribers can be interested in are expanding, so I think you liked it more. In the case of Mars, in fact, when I came to the future team, there are many areas that I am not familiar with, so I should play a different role here, rather, I found'Mars' from the idea that I should expand the area of SDF by dealing with things that have never been covered here. Was. At that time, the landing on Mars was in a short time, so while writing this, I read a lot of books on my own. So I studied the moon and went to Mars, and I read Carl Sagan's'Cosmos', which space lovers think like the Bible. It's an item that I've been thinking a lot about, so I think I'm more attached to it.

Reporter Lee Jung-ae

: Isn't it a bit difficult on the weekend of the week of writing newsletters?

Writer Choi Ye-jin

: I think it’s only good the next week after I write it Haha

Lee Jong-hoon Reporter

: Dr. Jane Goodall and Professor Choi Jae-cheon, both related to Mars

It teaches you that you are a person who came out as an SDF speaker. I really felt that SDF was pioneering and had a lot of insights. Maybe it's too far ahead of the times.

When I met Dr. Myung-Hyun Lee, I would like to invite Mrs. Carl Sagan. I said that, but I was already our speaker in 2008. So it was amazing.

Writer Choi Ye-jin

: When we held forums, all sessions have been written since last year. So I started to think about diversity and things like this a lot.

Newsletter and'voice service

' AI are also used a lot these days. I think it would be nice to think about that as well. Even in terms of making it accessible to more people.

Reporter Lee Jung-ae

: The voice service story actually came out from the beginning of our newsletter last year. I remember when I said that even if I don't have time to read the e-mail, if someone reads it, I can hear it even on the way to work. It would be nice to think about this as our next homework and find a way to promote it.

In our newsletter feedback, there were some comments about "too long". Even today, we have not succeeded in reducing the length. However, in a changing era where no one knows the answer, there are parts that are difficult to convey with a short point alone, as it contains the process and worries of gathering collective intelligence, constantly pondering and talking together, and finding what direction we really need to go. Do it.

SDF Diary is not a newsletter that curates existing news or promotes a specific service. Also, it may not be useful information for stocks or specific short-term investments. But amid their own hard lives his life

once a week or knock your time to think about the "fundamental question more meaningful for the era I live,"

and we try confident cautiously and

he suffered a corona 19 and even more someone I think we have really desperately realized that the problem of'we' in this age where we have to live together is no longer a problem of others but'my'.

Once again, we deeply appreciate all those who supported and

worked with us for the

past year

.

give.
