Reports were received that pesticides were leaked from warehouses that were damaged by flooding due to torrential rain.

The city of Gwangju said today (10th) that an investigation was initiated due to suspicion that pesticides stored in a warehouse in Seochang-dong, Seo-gu, were mixed with rainwater.

Due to the heavy rain that fell on the last 7 to 8 days, the area of Seochang-dong was submerged to the height of an adult's waist. Afterwards, pesticide bottles swept away by rainwater floated all over the village, and an oil film formed on the surface of the accumulated rainwater, and even a bad smell vibrated. Some residents who have come into contact with the water have complained of damage, such as skin problems.

In Gwangju City, most of the pesticide containers containing pesticides and herbicides were sealed, but it was believed that a small amount of pesticide left in the spent pesticide bottle was spilled into the water. In the West, after urgent control work, pesticides were removed with absorbent cloths, two oil fences were installed to prevent pesticides from spilling into the Yeongsan River.

The West also commissioned the Health and Environment Research Institute to check whether or not pesticides were detected and the degree of contamination. If pesticides are detected in the test sample, we will conduct an investigation with the warehouse manager to see if the pesticide management guidelines were followed.
