A North Korean defector woman who tried to escape over the Unification Bridge because she could not adapt to Korean society was caught by the police.

According to SBS coverage, the Gyeonggi Northern Police Agency's security investigation team is investigating a 61-year-old woman A for violating the National Security Act.

Person A was arrested for attempting to defect to North Korea near the south gate of Unification Bridge in Munsan-eup, Paju-si, Gyeonggi-do, around 3:30 am on the 13th.

A Southern soldier on duty reported to 112 when he saw Mr. A trying to escape under the Unification Bridge.

The two bags carried by Mr. A were divided into emergency food such as ramen and corn, raincoats, and cash.

The police voluntarily accompany A to the police box to investigate, and have a personal protection officer from the police station having jurisdiction over A's residence be called to take him away.

Person A, who defected from North Korea in 2015 and entered through China, etc., is said to have confessed, "Life in South Korea was not easy because there was a tendency to ignore North Korean defectors too much."

The police also confirmed that Mr. A had visited the Imjin River several times before attempting to defect to North Korea.

A police official said, "During the investigation, we are reviewing whether to file A for violating the National Security Act."

Article 6 of the National Security Act stipulates that those who defect to North Korea or fail to do so should be punished.

However, recently, civic groups and others have argued that “the law that defines North Korea as an enemy blocks exchanges and cooperation” and calls for the repeal of the National Security Act.

B, a 41-year-old female who has been defecting for the past 13 years, said in a phone call with SBS today (23rd), "There are a lot of North Korean defectors who can't adapt to this highly competitive society and either wander around or take their own lives."

He added, "If this news is published as an article, it will be clear what kind of comments will be made."
