At around 3:40 am on the 17th, a fire broke out in the Kona Electric Vehicle (EV) built in the parking lot of the Community Service Center in Wabu-eup, Namyang-si, Gyeonggi-do.

The fire was extinguished by the 119 fire brigade, who was reported and dispatched after burning a part of the car and causing property damage of 25 million won (estimated by the fire department).

The reporter said, "I could see smoke and sparks from the back of the car with a'pop' sound."

The car on fire is of 2018 type, and it was confirmed that the owner stopped the car in the parking lot of the residents' center in Wabu-eup the day before and connected the charger cable.

The fire department said, "It is presumed that there was a fire while charging the car battery in the electric car charger."

Police and fire departments are investigating the cause of the fire based on statements from vehicle owners and witnesses.

Earlier, since its launch in 2018, it was reported that a total of 13 fires, including 9 domestic and 4 overseas, have occurred.

Recently, a fire broke out in a Kona electric car that was charging in Jeju Island on the 26th of last month and Daegu on the 4th of last month.

In a series of fires, Hyundai Motor Company has been carrying out corrective actions (recalls) targeting 25,000 Kona electric vehicles from the 16th.
