The compilation work of "Dictionary" started in June 2013. Based on the seventh edition of "Modern Chinese Dictionary", 70,132 Chinese entries were included and translated.

《词典》编译组首席专家桑杰介绍，《词典》编译团队由来自高等院校、教育教材机构、民族语文和政府翻译机构等15名翻译人员组成。启动翻译9年来，采取个人初审、个别交流、交叉修改、集中审议、复审修订、统稿终审等方式不厌其烦地反复修改。先后就疑难词汇、生物名词、科技名词、成语、典故、谚语、古文、文献书名等的翻译召开专题讨论会60余次，个别交流、个别咨询、小型研讨100余次。
据了解，该《词典》除保留原版结构合理、查找方便、规范实用等特点外，注重以汉藏词汇对照的形式将原版《现代汉语词典》完整地翻译成藏文，注音求真求实、释义准确完备、例证充分丰富，具有新、全、准的优点。
中国藏学研究中心总干事郑堆在致辞中表示，《词典》的出版极大的缓解了涉藏地区少数民族师生工具书短缺的空白，实现了汉文和藏文在现代语境中的深度通融，形成了汉藏语言珠联璧合的话语新格局。
青海省政协主席、党组书记、统战部长公保扎西在致辞中指出，推广普及国家通用语言文字是宪法规定的责任，也是铸牢中华民族共同体意识的重要途径，更是我国各民族共同走向现代化的客观需要，“翻译《现代汉语词典》，是我国各少数民族同胞学习国家通用语言文字、增强中华文化认同的重要工具书，是各民族深度交往交流交融、共同传承弘扬优秀传统文化的标志性基础性成果。”
