"Dewa" innovates a system that achieves financial savings of 17 million dirhams annually

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has announced that it has won the award for "Best Innovative Energy Technology for the Year 2020", at the 16th session of the "Asia Energy Awards", for its smart control system for gas turbines in power plants, which is the first of its kind in the world. .

The system was developed by a team of the authority’s engineers, led by Emirati experts, and in cooperation with experts from the German company, Siemens. The system combines thermodynamic sciences with “digital twinning” techniques, “artificial intelligence” and “machine learning” to control the turbines. Gas station "M" in "Jebel Ali", which is the largest station for the production of energy and water desalination in the UAE.

The smart control system contributed to raising the turbine’s efficiency and increasing its production capacity, in addition to reducing fuel consumption and reducing harmful emissions. When the system is applied to all gas turbines at the M station, the system will also contribute to achieving financial savings of 17 million dirhams annually.

The Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, affirmed the authority’s commitment to the vision and directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to achieve the National Innovation Strategy launched by His Highness to make the UAE one of the most numerous countries. He added: “The award acquires a special character, as it comes as an appreciation of the distinguished capabilities and experiences of the people of the Emirates, and a new global recognition that strengthens the position of the UAE in international forums, and consolidates the state’s competitiveness in all fields,” noting that the authority is working to establish a culture of innovation among its employees and members of society. It relies on innovation as a fundamental pillar of its work and institutional approach, and is proceeding confidently towards preparing for the next 50 years and building a sustainable future.

It is noteworthy that the authority won awards for "best project for smart grids", "best project for transmission and distribution of energy," and "best environmental performance", within the 15th session of the "Asia Energy Awards".
