Wolfsburg (dpa) - The expansion of the fleet of all-electric vehicles should go faster at Volkswagen under the pressure of stricter climate targets.
By 2030, 70 percent of total sales in Europe are to be attributed to this division, said core brand boss Ralf Brandstätter on Friday.
That means a doubling of the previously planned quota for battery-electric vehicles of 35 percent.
VW had already announced such a step as part of its strategic planning by the end of the current decade.
In view of the EU target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the next ten years by at least 55 percent compared to 1990 levels, a number of car manufacturers will have to tighten their own requirements again.
At VW it had initially been said, among other things, that 300,000 more electric cars of the core brand would have to be built annually in the European home market alone.
Where the necessary battery capacities should come from was discussed recently.
In production, the group is converting other plants to e-cars.
