09 January 2021 Professor Fabrizio Soccorsi, appointed personal doctor of Pope Francis in August 2015, has died. The Osservatore Romano reports this, explaining that the 78-year-old was hospitalized at Gemelli for an oncological disease, but the death occurred as a result of complications at Covid-19.

Bergoglio had chosen him as his personal doctor.

Soccorsi was head emeritus of hepatology at the San Camillo Hospital in Rome and consultant to the Health and Hygiene Directorate of the Governorate of the Vatican City State.



Graduated in Medicine and Surgery at the "La Sapienza" University of Rome in 1968, he obtained the qualification to practice the following year.

He has carried out a wide professional and teaching activity, up to the positions of head of the Department of Hepatology and director of the Department of Liver Diseases, Digestive System and Nutrition and of the Internal and Specialized Medicine Department of the San Camillo Forlanini Hospital in Rome.



He taught Immunology at the Medical School of Rome and the Lazio Region, held refresher courses on liver pathologies at the San Camillo Hospital and was the holder of the Chair of Clinical Medicine and Pharmacology at the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the University "Wisdom".

He has also developed several collaborations and consultancy in the Public Sector, with over a hundred scientific publications and contributions.

He was an expert of the Medical Council of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints.
