After the AstraZeneca corona vaccine was suspended, the vaccination summit planned for Wednesday evening has been postponed by the federal and state governments.

A government spokesman announced on Tuesday that a decision by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) on the vaccine should be awaited.

Chancellor Angela Merkel and the Prime Ministers actually wanted to discuss the inclusion of general practitioners in the vaccination campaign in order to advance it more quickly.

The precautionary suspension of the AstraZeneca vaccine now throws this back.

Reports of blood clots as a possible consequence of vaccination with the preparation had sparked a discussion about its safety.

Numerous countries stopped vaccinating AstraZeneca, including Italy and France.

The EMA wants to discuss this on Thursday.

Several doctors had previously expressed doubts about the decision to suspend vaccination with the drug from the British-Swedish manufacturer AstraZeneca for the time being.

"The fact that people get thromboses and pulmonary embolisms does not necessarily have to do with the vaccination," said World Medical President Frank Ulrich Montgomery to the editorial network Germany.

The international studies he was aware of said the frequency of thrombosis was about the same in the placebo group and in the vaccine group.

Montgomery fears that the vaccine will damage its image.

"The bottom line is, unfortunately, that this actually good and effective vaccine is not gaining greater acceptance among the population in many countries due to the vortex and the vaccination suspension," emphasized the World Medical President.

However, he expressed understanding for the examination of the severe cases of side effects in individual countries.

"Nevertheless, it is right that the national authorities check the suspected cases for serious side effects." He can understand that if there are incidents in a country like in Denmark, you should first check before you continue to vaccinate.

"But that is not the case in all countries that are temporarily without AstraZeneca." The European authority EMA has once again confirmed that AstraZeneca is a safe and effective vaccine against the coronavirus.

Vaccination summit is postponed

Several European countries have decided to stop vaccination after reports of serious side effects after vaccination with AstraZeneca's vaccine.

The Federal Ministry of Health announced on Monday that the corona vaccinations with the preparation would be suspended as a precaution.

After new reports of thrombosis of the cerebral veins in connection with the vaccination, the Paul Ehrlich Institute believes that further investigations are necessary.

Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) spoke of a "pure precautionary measure".

The EMA also maintains that the vaccinations could continue.

The examination of the cases will continue, she said on Monday evening in Amsterdam, her security committee would decide on Thursday.

"The advantages of vaccination outweigh"

The pandemic officer at the Technical University of Munich Clinic, Christoph Spinner, also sees the suspension of vaccinations with the AstraZeneca product as critical.

Security is the top priority.

The senior physician at the university hospital told the dpa whether the vaccination had to be suspended.

There is currently no assumption for a specific mechanism that should lead to cerebral vein thrombosis.

"For all we know today, the drug is safe," said Spinner.

The number of seven cases of special thrombosis of the cerebral veins with 1.6 million vaccinations in Germany, mentioned by Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU), is very low.

"The events are very rare," says Spinner.

And: "We are currently vaccinating people with previous illnesses as a priority."

"The advantages of vaccination outweigh", the doctor is convinced.

"Incidentally, a severe Covid 19 disease also regularly causes thromboembolic events - for this reason alone, a vaccination is absolutely sensible."

Spinner emphasized that possible side effects are continuously investigated after vaccines and drugs have been approved.

"The vaccine has not been recalled - nor should it be destroyed," said Spinner.

In view of the latest reports, however, Spinner assumes that the number of reports for such cases will now go up - which in turn will further reduce confidence in the important vaccine.

“The AstraZeneca is the second most important vaccine for us.

The decision to suspend vaccination causes great damage to the confidence of the vaccine.

This is difficult to repair later on. "

Several health politicians, including the SPD health expert Karl Lauterbach, are critical of the temporary vaccination ban.

The Green health expert Janosch Dahmen even called the temporary stop negligent.

The member of the Bundestag sees it as “the next wave of shock” for confidence in the federal government's corona policy, as he told the dpa.

"An alternative would be to provide detailed information about the manageable risk and continue to vaccinate those people who would like to be vaccinated with AstraZeneca."
