Bamberg (dpa / lby) - Upper Franconia is to become a funding region for research and use of hydrogen as an energy source.

"The federal government is making 43 million euros available for this," said the Bundestag member Andreas Schwarz (SPD) in Bamberg.

"With the funding, we want to create incentives for municipalities and medium-sized companies to invest in hydrogen."

First the Bavarian radio reported about it.

In the next three or four years, Upper Franconia is to become a “real laboratory” for hydrogen, explained Schwarz.

"We have an incredibly large number of actors in the field on site."

The Federation of Self-Employed in Bavaria is now supposed to network these actors and initiate specific projects.

For example, a logistics company is to convert trucks to hydrogen for four million euros, reported Schwarz.

Fuel cells from the automotive supplier Bosch, which are produced in Bamberg, could be used.

There is already a prospect who wants to build hydrogen filling stations.

A research and application center for hydrogen is to be built in Lichtenfels for eleven million euros, announced Schwarz.

“But funding can also be of interest to municipalities.

The energy for swimming pools and sports halls could be produced from hydrogen in the future. "

The operator of a hotel and a food manufacturer have also shown interest.

"We all talk about hydrogen, but nothing happens," criticized the member of the Bundestag.

"Our idea is: We'll pick out Upper Franconia and just give it a try."

First, all projects should be collected and then presented to the Ministry of the Environment for funding.

"Our goal is to soon implement similar projects nationwide with the experience from Upper Franconia."

The Free State also wants to push hydrogen technology forward.

100 hydrogen filling stations are to be built across Bavaria by 2023.

The state government is investing 50 million euros in this, with a further 65 million going into research funding.
