Niederfüllbach (dpa / lby) - A car driver in Upper Franconia probably lost consciousness and caused a serious accident.

The 54-year-old was seriously injured in the collision with an oncoming car in Niederfüllbach (Coburg district), as a police spokesman said on Tuesday.

The man is in the hospital and is still unconscious.

In the other car, the driver and a five-year-old boy suffered minor injuries.

The child was reportedly brought to the hospital by rescue helicopter because his condition was initially unclear.

The accident occurred near a shopping center and, according to the fire department, attracted numerous onlookers.

The responsible district fire chief Manfred Lorenz said that numerous people took photos and hindered the emergency services.

The extent was "severe," said Lorenz, who was there himself: "That was perverse."

Both vehicles had been totaled.
