Two independent United Nations experts on Monday called for an international investigation into the poisoning in August of the main opponent of the Kremlin, Alexeï Navalny, whose "immediate release" they are calling for.

The latter is serving a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence, handed down shortly after his return to Russia.

"Given the inadequate response from national authorities, the use of banned chemical weapons (...), we believe that an international investigation should be carried out as a matter of urgency in order to establish the facts and clarify all the circumstances concerning the poisoning of Mr. Navalny ”, said in a statement Agnès Callamard, Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, and Irene Khan, Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of freedom of opinion and expression .

Detained in Pokrov

"Alexeï Navalny arrived in an establishment of the Russian penitentiary services of the region of Vladimir to carry out his sentence", indicated at the end of February in a statement the public commission of Moscow (ONK) of surveillance of the places of detention.

According to sources interviewed by the TASS and Ria Novosti agencies, the opponent will be transferred to the No. 2 penal colony located in the small town of Pokrov, in the Vladimir region of European Russia.
