Hamburg (dpa / lno) - Despite the around 37,000 confirmed corona infections last year, the sickness rate in Hamburg has fallen slightly, according to the Techniker Krankenkasse (TK).
The employees insured with TK reported an average of 14.8 days of absence, as the health insurance company announced on Thursday.
In 2019 there were 15.2 days of absence.
The sickness rate fell slightly from 4.17 to 4.05 percent.
"Since the beginning of the corona pandemic, infectious diseases and colds in particular have decreased significantly in Hamburg," said the head of the TK state representative, Maren Puttfarcken.
"One explanation for this could be the stricter distance and hygiene rules during the pandemic."
According to the Barmer health insurance, the number of sick leave due to flu halved between November and Christmas compared to the two previous years.
At the end of 2018 and 2019, an average of 923 to 1721 Barmer insured persons were on sick leave due to influenza.
In the same period of 2020, an average of only 661 people per week were unable to work due to flu.
"The distance and hygiene rules to protect against corona obviously also reduce the risk of influenza," said the country manager of Barmer, Frank Liedtke.

According to an analysis by DAK-Gesundheit, sick employees in Germany were absent from work for an average of longer than in 2019. However, the number of incapacity for work decreased overall, as the analysis shows.
Accordingly, the sickness rate in 2020 was 4.1 percent, slightly below the previous year's level of 4.2 percent.
The sickness rate quantifies the number of sick persons who are unable to work based on 100 compulsory members of a health insurance company.
Insured persons must send a certificate of incapacity to work to their health insurance company if they are absent for more than three days.
